Tannins in green tea stimulate the release of gastric acid that could cause stomach upset. It gets worse as empty stomach amplify the side effects of caffeine. Taking in caffeine on an empty stomach could cause indigestion and heartburn.

Therefore, you shouldn’t consume green tea an empty stomach. It is best to drink green tea after a meal or in-between meals.

Right After Breakfast or Meal?

You shouldn’t drink green tea right after having your meal.

Tannins are strong antioxidant found in green tea, it helps to boost your body immunity. However, tannins could interfere with iron absorption as tannins bind to iron. This reduces your body ability to absorb food properly which could lead to tiredness and breathlessness.

It’s recommended to wait for 30 – 60 minutes before or after your meals.

Before Bed?

It’s recommended to drink a cup of green tea before you sleep. And the best time to drink it is 2 hours before you hit the bed.
